Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Edema Management and Tissue Recovery

The lymphatic system plays a critical role in fluid balance, immune function, and waste removal. Impairment or overload of this system can result in edema, inflammation, and delayed recovery.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Indications for Treatment

Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be indicated for:

  • Pre-Surgery Lymphatic Preparation

  • Post-Surgical Edema (swelling) and Bruising

  • Post-Traumatic Edema (swelling) and Bruising

  • Sinus Congestion and Allergies

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Migraine/Headaches

  • Lipedema

  • General Lymphatic Wellness

Treatment Methodology

Treatment is performed using lighter-pressure, repetitive, and directional strokes that follow lymphatic anatomy and drainage patterns.

Sessions may include:

  • Stimulation of primary lymphatic regions (cervical, axillary, inguinal)

  • Targeted drainage of affected areas

  • Sequencing techniques to optimize fluid movement

Pressure remains superficial to avoid collapse of lymphatic vessels

MLD Clinical Outcomes

With consistent treatment, patients may demonstrate:

  • Reduction in Edema

  • Decreased Tissue Tension

  • Improved Skin Mobility and Tissue Quality

  • Increased Comfort and Functional Mobility

  • Enhanced Rate of Recovery

  • Decrease in Bruising

  • Decrease in Fibrotic Scar Tissue

Plan of Care

Treatment frequency and duration are determined based on clinical presentation, severity of symptoms, and patient response.

Plans of care may include:

  • Assessment/measurements pre/post treatments

  • Multiple sessions per week in acute or post-surgical phases
