Physician Prescribed Massage and Manual Therapy
At Idaho Medical Massage, we believe that massage is a vital part of the healthcare continuum. Medical Massage is a clinical, results-driven approach focused on helping managing pain, restoring mobility and improving your quality of life.
Physician Prescription/Referral
A physician's prescription is required for medical massage because medical massage is provided as part of a healthcare treatment plan for a diagnosed medical condition. The prescription establishes medical necessity, identifies the patient's diagnosis, and ensures that treatment is coordinated with the patient's overall healthcare plan.
Who Can Write Prescriptions?
-
MDs & DOs: General practitioners or specialists (like Orthopedists or Neurologists).
-
Chiropractors (DCs): These are some of your best referral sources.
-
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) & Physician Assistants (PAs): They handle most primary care visits these days and have full prescribing authority.
-
Dentists (DDS/DMD): Specifically for TMJ or facial pain issues.
-
Podiatrists (DPM): For foot and ankle-related pain.
Diagnosis codes (ICD-10 codes) supplied by the referring provider communicate the specific condition being treated, such as low back pain, cervical pain, headaches, muscle spasms, or other musculoskeletal disorders. These diagnosis codes guide the development of an appropriate treatment plan, support clinical documentation, and are required by many insurance carriers to determine eligibility for coverage and reimbursement.
Which CPT Codes Are Billed to Insurance
At Idaho Medical Massage, we bill insurance using clinically appropriate CPT codes based on the services provided during your treatment and the medical necessity documented in your care plan.
Commonly billed codes may include:
-
CPT 97124: Massage Therapy
-
CPT 97140: Manual Therapy
To bill insurance, the prescription must include a Diagnosis Code (ICD-10) and the provider's NPI number.
