Physician Referrals for Massage and Manual Therapy
Medical Massage is performed working in collaboration with physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers. This non-invasive, drug-free approach supporting soft tissue restrictions, musculoskeletal dysfunction, trigger points, movement restrictions, and plays an important role in improving overall patient outcomes. Treatment is guided by a healthcare provider’s diagnosis and referral when required.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, low-pressure manual therapy technique designed to facilitate lymphatic transport, reduce fluid accumulation, and support immune. It is commonly indicated as an adjunctive treatment in conditions involving lymphatic insufficiency, post-surgical edema, and chronic inflammatory states. When incorporated into a physician-directed treatment plan, MLD can improve clinical outcomes by addressing fluid stasis, tissue congestion, and impaired lymphatic return.
Massage therapists do not diagnose medical conditions; instead, we rely on the prescribing provider to identify the condition and outline appropriate care.

A massage prescription typically consists of a series of sessions rather than a single visit. Similar to other healthcare services, the prescription may include recommended techniques, treatment frequency, and duration based on the provider’s diagnosis or clinical findings.
For example, a referral may outline massage therapy for low back pain, performed x1 - x2 per week for 3 months to support recovery and symptom management.
