Definitions and CPT Codes

Medical & orthopedic massage definitions

Massage Therapy - includes techniques like effleurage, petrissage, and tapotement (stroking, compression, percussion)

​

Manual Therapy - Used for more advanced manual therapy techniques like some but not limited too manual traction, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), Cupping, PNF, positional release (PRT), KT taping, muscle energy techniques (MET)

Medical Massage - Medical Massage is prescribed by a physician to help improve a diagnosed condition or dysfunction. Medical Massage is not a single technique or modality.

 

Orthopedic Massage - Orthopedic Massage is self appointed by the client and does not need a prescription. It is aimed to help in the treatment of a specific condition or dysfunction.
