
Contraindications for Medical and Therapeutic Massage

Medical and therapeutic massage is a safe and effective treatment for many conditions; however, there are certain situations where massage may be contraindicated, require modification, or need medical clearance prior to treatment.
Your safety is our priority. All clients receive an intake and assessment to determine whether massage is appropriate and how treatment should be adjusted based on individual health conditions.
Total (Absolute) Contraindications
Massage therapy should not be performed under the following conditions (not limited too):

Fever or active systemic infection

Contagious illnesses (including flu, cold, or viral infections)

Acute inflammation or infection
-
Recent surgery without medical clearance
-
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)/ blood clots/phlebitis

Uncontrolled or severe hypertension
-
Severe cardiac conditions without physician approval
-
Open wounds, burns, or active skin infections
-
Active cancer in the treatment area without physician clearance

Intoxication (alcohol or drugs)
-
Rheumatoid arthritis or gout flare up
-
Osteoporosis
-
Hepatitis
-
Aneurism
-
Bleeding Disorders
-
Congestive heart failure
-
Lupus flare up
-
Shingles
Massage will be postponed until the condition has resolved or medical clearance is obtained.
Local Contraindications
Massage may be avoided or modified in specific areas of the body when the following are present:

Acute injury (within 48–72 hours unless otherwise indicated)

Bruising or hematoma
-
Varicose veins
-
Localized infection or inflammation
-
Skin conditions (rashes, eczema, psoriasis flare-ups, fungal infections)

Recent fractures or surgical sites
-
Hernias
-
Areas of nerve compression or acute nerve pain

Backers Cyst
-
Acute Bursitis
-
Periostitis
-
Herniated or acute buldging disks
-
Open wounds
-
Ruptured tendon or muscle
-
Recent surgery
-
Broken bone
-
Lymphedema
-
Spinal Stenosis
-
Pacemaker (no anterior neck work)

Surgically placed hardware (pins, plates, screws, rods)

Neuropathy
-
Chrones Disease, diverticulitis

Partial Tears or muscle or tendon
In these cases, massage may still be performed on other parts of the body while avoiding the affected area.
Medical Contraindications/Conditions Requiring Caution
Medical massage may be performed with modifications or physician approval for the following conditions:

Active Cancer

Epilepsy

Autoimmune disorders

Diabetes (especially with neuropathy or poor circulation)

Cardiovascular disease

Scleroderma

High blood pressure
-
Multiple sclerosis

Neurological disorders

Myasthenia gravis

Multiple Sclerosis
-
Normal pressure hydrocephalus
Treatment plans are adjusted to ensure safety while still providing therapeutic benefit.

Medical massage is assessment-based and outcome-focused. Prior to treatment, we review your health history, current symptoms, medications, and physician recommendations. If massage is not appropriate at the time of your appointment, we will discuss alternative options or reschedule as needed.
When necessary, we work in coordination with your healthcare provider to ensure massage therapy aligns with your overall medical care plan.
